Mark Has Some Good News, Part 60, Staying awake

Mark 13:

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day or Hour

32 "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."

We all want to finish things for ourselves. For youth especially your life for the better part of 12 years is finishing one year of school after another. Each building on the other but progressing in a long cycle of grades, assignments and projects. And for the most part that's your job.

The second you become a Christian your job description changes. You go from being a person with no master to a person with The Master. And He (as we read here) has expectations for you. He wants you to wait for him. He want you to serve him when he calls for you and he wants you to be ready.

A lot of focus is placed on what happens when you come to know your master (Jesus) for the first time. As if the sum of your life is only a confession. But he has work for you and expects you to do it. Work like being ready for his return. Being ready to give reasons for why you stand in your position. Being ready to proclaim who Jesus is and what he has done.

Are you ready and waiting or just finished and bored?
