Mark Has Some Good News, Part 5, Immediacy
And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. Mark 1:29-32 (ESV)
Some people criticize Mark's use of the word immediately. If you haven't been counting Mark has used it 6 times in this chapter. It's like everything Jesus was doing was hopped up on Redbull and there was no time to waste ink with details.
I like to rest in verses like 2 Tim 3:16
I'd like to think there is a reason The Ghost choose that word for Mark to use. Lots of words to use yet "immediately" made the cut. This teaches us something about how to start your ministry. Jesus is hitting these first days or even day hard. He's not political, crafty, and subtle, He's direct. Goes in to preach teach and heal, and doesn't look back. Now we know by reading the rest of the gospels this is not a default mode for Jesus. Sabbath rest is important. Still in the starting strides of His ministry he acts with a sense of urgency, a sense of purpose a sense of immediacy.
Let me ask you then.
What makes you want to move in your ministry? Is it knowing how many of your friend don't know Jesus? How about those you could be helping in your town or city in his name. What about correcting and contending for Jesus where he's debated and lied about. That one gets me the most as I'm on a town that has 7 Mormon churches all about the same size as the average Christian church in town. That makes me want to do something!
So if you know Jesus and the Holy Spirit has given you abilities to do the work the Father made you to do. The question remains, when will you start? Will it be at your convenience, or the convergence of you and your work? Will you wait for a liar to speak to your friends first or show Jesus as truth and light in their lives?
Will you be there in the immediate future?
